Well, it would be nice if they can make careless ammunition work this time around. As I remember it the BIG problem has been with Accuracy and that would be a real Issue in a Sniper Rifle. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I fear that technology , will take the human element from warfare ... and turn the waging of war into a "war porn" / video game kinda feel for the service folks who use and operate drones , "smart rifles" etc.... Or those who make the decisions to go to war for others , but do not have to go themselves

Andy, You are correct but humans have been saying that since before the invention of firearms. Every technology that moved us away from hitting somebody in the head with a rock has evoked the same sentiments. The early philosophers wrote about it. Even Da Vinci had his detractors, the most important inventions of his time were war instruments.

Yeah ...But these are my sentiments..so they are more important ( at least to me ) :D

On a serious note though...
Da Vinci and kind , did not have to deal with the video game mentality of many of the people today.
I get that war has always been "romanticized" about...I just think it is a more pervasive today then in the past...what with fewer folks actually experiencing combat or even joining the military.
( Not that I want folks to experience combat... )

I appreciate your thoughts and don't disagree. However, the bottom line is we need to do whatever is nessisary to win. A new technology that is game changing on the battlefield (or anywhere else) actually reduces carnage. The best example are the bombs dropped on Japan but there are many more. Oliver Cromwell was so dominant and determined on the battlefield, many villages would simply submit when he showed up preventing many bloodbaths. The same was true of John Hawkwood, his mercenaries and there English longbows 200 years earlier. It is also what finnaly allowed us to prevail in our own civil war. It would have continued without Sherman's March to the sea. The propaganda before and during the war failed to convince the secessionists that there efforts in lives and treasure were futile. It looked to the common citizen that victory was possible but it never was. We lost 620,000 people in that failed attempt. If Hiram Maxim had developed his gun 40 years earlier and the US had it......there may not ever have been a war.those are just some examples of conflicts my realitives were involved with. The Chinese Art Of War text illustrates many more. Humans don't change, only there technology.

My dislike is more aimed at the mentality that war can be fought on the "cheap" or with little to no loss of life on one side...
And the lack of understanding that some the folks have , who use and think that "High Tech" means you do not need people on the ground or no longer teach a skill...

Case in point :
As of 2015 all Long Range Surveillance Detachment Units in the Army were disbanded... with the thought that a drone can do the job...
There in no substitute for the man ( or team ) on the ground collecting data or other missions that were covered by these teams.

Very true. We have never recovered from Jimmy Carter dismantling our intelligence network around the world. Obama continued the destruction. Those relationships and assets take generations in some cases to develop and foster. Intelegence is the cheapest cost of any defense program. All great leaders take full advantage of the best available. People like George Washington credit there successes to great intelegence.

The future wars will be far more lethal in my opinion because technology is improving by the minute. That Russian sniper rifle and a good shot with one of those flying boards would be a brutal enemy. It' the future and there is no stopping progress.
