I Sure like the balance and looks of the Ruger GP100 Match Champion. A bit out of my budget, and already have a 4" standard model. Not a big fan of the full underlug however.

Since it's a shooter, not collectable, decided to modify the one I have. Cuts were made using a brass mandrel, centered on the bore, with the milling machine. All said and done, shed 1.3 ounces (approx 3 loaded cartridges). Overall, feels more balanced. Has anyone else done this modification?

Although I've always preferred the "look" of full lug GP revolvers, that's a nice and smooth looking piece of work you did there!

Looks great! Could you give a little more detail on how you milled off the underlug? Do you have any pictures of the process?

Full underlugs makes sense for my 8" and 10" barrels. I would like to take off the extra weight for the 6" and 4" barrels. I also like the look of only partial underlugs for these barrel shrouds. I do have a knee mill and a SB 13" lathe.

Mike,
Your project would be easier, as the barrels are removed. I supported the barrel with the brass mandrel, in my mill vise on a thick parallel. Rotated the barrel mandrel assy a couple of degrees after each cut, creating small facets that were easy to file and sand smooth. Ball endmill to finish the remaining underlug. Btw, I rough machined the cutaway first, before mounting on mandrel. The entire project, including making the mandrel, took about half a day.
