From the Lawn Mower to the Blade

My first foray into the world of knife making did not turn out the way I pictured, but it was fun nonetheless. These two knives started life as a lowly old, and abused lawn mower blade. The first one I made was the larger, and the only tools I used were a grinder and a file. The tanto was the first knife I made with a small belt sander, and these thing definitely have a large learning curve. Already the knifes I am working on now are coming out a bit more refined.

Ya, the steel is great 1095, so it will rust on you, but is tough.

Looks good. I have made a couple myself just takes a lot of practice to get your technique figured out. Agree belt sanders have a learning curve they can take material off very fast so go slow and dont let it get too hot keep a bucket of water close by and cool it often. I have some blade and handle stuff in the edged weapons classifieds if you havent seen it yet.

BillM helped me out a lot and gave me a bunch of handle material to get started with. For metal I am now working on leaf springs. Thanks for the tips!

When I was doing medieval combat reenactment we made swords out of automotive leaf springs. It's the perfect material for blades.
