I have a Remington 700 .30-06 with a free floated barrel that shoots ragged little holes with match ammo or quality reloads as long as I do my part. I also have a custom built .300 Weatherby built on a accurized Howa 1500 action that is bedded fro the back of the action to the end of the barrel channel and will shoot ragged holes with quality ammo. Each gun is very dependent.
I have found most guns that are pressure bedded at the tip will tend to string groups as the barrel heats up. From the sounds of it, one ragged hole groups are not what you are going for, so for the most part, I wouldn't invest the time and money into having a range gun free floated, but if you get a stock and the barrel free floats, then consider it a bonus.
