The way the right side is folded inward, I'd say it got caught in the ejection port and torn up by the bolt or slide...

when my sten jams on a failure to eject it will do something that looks kinda identical to the spent brass. Parts of it are smashed in in your picture it looks like. In is usually IME a result of mechanical forces.

Cases I've shot & collected that have failed are generally cracked not torn.
I bet that one required some help getting it out...

I always take my damaged, old, and screwed up brass to the range, and scatter it around on purpose just to make brass scroungers scratch their head in wonder. Ever wonder why anyone would leave revolver brass on the ground?
