when my sten jams on a failure to eject it will do something that looks kinda identical to the spent brass. Parts of it are smashed in in your picture it looks like. In is usually IME a result of mechanical forces.
 
DizzyJ's explanation looks good to me, especially if the primer's dented. Whatever happened, it wasn't in the chamber when it did.
 
I'd say it was shot at unintentionally or intentionally.

If not, someone has a really bad day.
 
I always take my damaged, old, and screwed up brass to the range, and scatter it around on purpose just to make brass scroungers scratch their head in wonder. :eek: Ever wonder why anyone would leave revolver brass on the ground?:D
