I was thinking of taking some of my sculpting experience and starting to make some pancake style or crossbreed style holsters. So one of theirs would be cheap research. ;)
 
It is pretty easy to mold kydex, even without a dedicated oven or press. I just use a heat gun and a leather glove or sometimes just a towel to protect my hand from the heat, press it to the gun, wait for it to cool. You can get good results with this very cheap investment. I have made a number of hybrid leather/kydex holsters and they work very well, at a fraction of the cost of manufactured ones.
