That thing is pretty rad but those 20 inchers always seemed a tad heavy to me. I swear they used lighter barrels back in Vietnam.

They did. Google a picture of the old M16 and zoom in on the barrel - should look like a pencil barrel.

Current M16 barrels are Gov Profile - thin under handguard but about .750 in front
