Just another baby-step toward the ultimate goal of banning guns, period. ​

I'm a retired city detective, I won't say from where, but it is a larger Oregon agency. I was on the Major Crime, team and often conducted the firearm trace through BATFE, IF a gun was recovered at the scene. A gun trace is done by calling DC, giving them the make and serial #, and they would tell us who the original purchaser was,... maybe. Then it came down to old fashioned leg work, trying to find the purchaser, and IF he/she was still alive, find out the gun was either stolen, or sold to some guy named "Mike." "No, officer I don't known his last name. Sorry."

In 99% of the cases where a gun was found, we rapidly reached a dead end. I read somewhere that in those jurisdictions that require registration, there has NEVER been a crime solved based on registration. And of course the gun must be left at the scene in order to get the serial #. If the perp takes the gun with him / her, there is nothing to trace. So much for helping law enforcement with these stupid laws.

So if all of that is true, then what is the real reason for registration? Ask an admin type cop and he will say "it is so we know where the guns are and who has them."

Can't confiscate them if you don't know where they are!​
