In all seriousness, could be good fun for our angling friends. :)

LOL. BIG NEWS!!! No limits! Er, maybe want to take a look at the lake on satellite view first. It looks like there are zero facilities, or water in the satellite view. (Whenever that was taken) No rest rooms, water, boat launch, trees, wind breaks....About as in the middle of nowhere as you can get in Oregon. I'm going to guess there are already few, or no, fish in the lake considering the dry summer we had.

Too bad I don't give ODFW money for a fishing license these days. I really wish I could give my cash to support their terrible management of resources.

Yup. The gal that delivered my new fridge said that Phillips Reservoir is down to zero water also.

Malheur doesn't surprise me... even in wet years that lake is only about 3' deep. Nothing but a giant slough/swamp/wetland full of skeeters. Ducks like it tho.

But, but...In the article the lake looks beautiful?

I wonder if anyone in potland will say. "Hey HONEY! limits are off at Malheur Res! Let's take the kids fishing for a few days and go get us some trout!"

Word!

Back in the Dream Time, I bought my wife, daughter and son in law fishing licesnses and I equipped the Daughter and SIL with poles and gear.

Then k*te shut it all down because fish don't wear masks, and I am out a couple of hundred and I can't fish but then she walks her dog, mask-less, with armed escort, paid for by us.

The way I figure it, unless they want to refund the 4 licenses I did not get to use, I am good to go for a while!

I have a funny story about Malheur. Rather, my old friend who used to manage it had a funny story. One particularly bad summer they had a nasty disease (or algae?) that was killing all the ducks. They'd land and feed, but something would happen and after a while they succumb by losing control of their neck muscles. They'd literally drown. He said they first tried to rescue as many as they could by scooping out the ducks by boat. When that quickly became futile, he had an idea.
He drove to the nearest airforce base and checked out a .50 cal. machine gun. I don't remember who he spoke to in order to get the approval, however, he was a B-52 turret ball gunner in WWII - maybe he was friends with the base commander?

Anyway, he setup on a hill and when the big flocks would come, he'd touch off a round right into the middle of them. Considering this was a wetlands and protected area, my first question was "did you hit any of them?" He responded, "Well, I imagine I did. It was a pretty big splash, but it scared the flocks away." And thereby keeping them out of the refuge, he saved their lives. I just laughed, thinking about some woke dinks getting a load of that nowadays.

That man's name was David Marshall. He has a plaque dedicated to him out at one of the ponds at Malheur. He made many contributions to the Portland Audubon Society. Pretty safe to say he was a bird nut. If you ever thought that was a geeky hobby, all one had to do was spend some time with Dave. It didn't take long for his stories to intrigue. His passion for birds, I realized, was contagious.

To be fair, if I got to shoot a machine gun into the middle of the lake to scare away some ducks…I'd definitely be a bird guy too.
