Good info.!! Raising food fish is a challenge in a SHTF situation. Having fresh circulating water without electricity, Oxygenation, Charcoal filters, food, will all be scarce or hard to come by after the grid crashes or if electricity is rationed. I'll stick with chickens and rabbits....

I wouldn't depend much on fish anti-biotics post SHTF, mostly because they're already way overused now, and will be useless in the future. Compounds like sulfur powder (also use as an AB for traumatic injury) will be more versatile for treating wounds as the bacteria havn't seen these in 50 years+. Which makes them more valuable in a topical setting. I'm still a big fan of saline for topical injury.

I hope you meant "sulfa" powder! It was a miracle for battle wounds in WWII.

Many meds used on 4 legged critters are used on humans. Saw a book several years ago writen by a doctor on how to use these meds. They must be deluded for use in humans. Checked this out myself by looking in my med kit for my cows and pigs. Sure enough, found the same meds as was perscribe for my kids but at lower dosages. Price?? At the time 1 quart for 10.00 bucks. 10 pills for my kid, 30.00 bucks. Need to sew up a cut, check out your local vet supply store. Yes the stuff is just as sterle as the local hospital stuff and a hell of a lot cheaper.

Keep in mind that most of those Fish meds come from China, with no FDA oversight or testing for purity.
Considering that Chinese pet treats kill hundreds of US pets I would rather opt for out dated human meds.
Of course either way it's a crap shoot.
This is why Folk Medicine is so popular in Socialist countries, it's the only way to escape the Death Panels (no joke)

I have, for Thirty Five years, carried Goldenseal (powdered) Herb. Expensive? No, $120.00/# but an ounce is So Much it is quite inexpensive.

First it is a coagulant, it provides material for blood to clot to.
Second, it is a natural antibiotic. Clean the wound as best possible, pour a bit on the wound, hold it tight till bleeding stops.

I have combined its use with "Butterfly Bandages" when not near a doctor. My last self repair was equivlant to a similar cut that required eight stitches, on a Forefinger!!!!

I have done this for a very serious knife cut, nearly to the bone, for a person who had No Medical Insurance, the process included deeply cleaning the wound, drying it, while elevated, placing the Golden seal upon the wound, pressure upon wound as I Butterflied the finger. Finished off with an Aluminum finger splint, to keep finger stabilized.

From start to finish, fifteen minutes tops.

BTW, a great IFAK product to add, is Generic Eye Drops. Keep sealed, until needed. Use: as pressure wash, squirt into wound, several small squirts, it will amaze you for the speed of cleaning. Note, do not use Eye Drops that have any extras in the product, the generic is a simple saline solution, and is sterile, until opened.

Edited, just before Posting: I carry the GoldenSeal Powder in a half ounce squeeze type bottle made by Nalgene, it provides a great ability to provide control on the application there of...

yea use fish antibiotics, this will mean i will have a much easier time gathering resources when you have poisoned yourself.

Many Herbal meds have proven medicinal properties it does not take much to make a topical ointment antibiotic, a high or low PH balance (salt, vinegar) will kill most bacteria and any clean powder will aid coagulation to a greater or lessor extent. Internal medicine is where things get tricky.
Lupine will kill internal parasites, too much Lupine will kill the patient.
Birch/Aspen bark tea was the foundation of aspirin
Elderberry tea relieves symptoms of the flu
Poppies can be used to suppress many symptoms
there are many resources out there
but internal infections are beyond most herbal medications

What is Goldenseal? Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is one of the most popular herbs on the market today.
