Well maybe they were only partially fully semi-automatic.The one time they had a photo of actual fully automatic rifles? See small caption at bottom of photo.

Select-fire - i.e., capable of full auto and semi-auto, just like any other M16Honestly those are semi auto and 3 round burst…
Ok so you know that the M16A2 was 3 Round burst and so was M16A4 and the M4A2… based on what I saw in the picture they looked like M16A4's that's why I said 3 round burstSelect-fire - i.e., capable of full auto and semi-auto, just like any other M16
The point is that while they are indeed semi-auto, they are also full-auto capable.
Nope - didn't know that. But I do know anything more than one shot per pull of trigger is "full auto", whether it is 3 round "burst" or 30 rounds.Ok so you know that the M16A2 was 3 Round burst and so was M16A4 and the M4A2… based on what I saw in the picture they looked like M16A4's that's why I said 3 round burst
They probably are full auto it's just difficult to tell and depends on the yearNope - didn't know that. But I do know anything more than one shot per pull of trigger is "full auto", whether it is 3 round "burst" or 30 rounds.
How many M16s (of any variant) do the Marines have that are semi-auto only? They probably are full auto it's just difficult to tell and depends on the year
when you have a milled rifle but every one else has stamped...
None but unless it's firing all the rounds with only a single trigger press it's not considered autoHow many M16s (of any variant) do the Marines have that are semi-auto only?
I disagree. What would you call it then? Semi full auto?None but unless it's firing all the rounds with only a single trigger press it's not considered auto
Burst fire would be a Machine Gun but it would not be Full Auto. Full Auto is hold the trigger and it shoots until empty. 3 round burst would be burst fire.I disagree. What would you call it then? Semi full auto?
Considered by whom?
We are talking about technical semantics that are way over the head of the people (e.g., Associated Press) who don't have a clue about semi-auto vs. full auto. People who call AR-15s "machine guns", who wouldn't know the difference between an Assault Rifle and a MG much less an LMG vs. HMG vs. MP vs a Battle Rifle. People who don't know the difference between a clip and a magazine. People who call just about anything an "Assault Weapon".Burst fire would be a Machine Gun but it would not be Full Auto. Full Auto is hold the trigger and it shoots until empty. 3 round burst would be burst fire.
Agreed. TIA......and let's get this thread back on track with a handy six-shooter!
No it's selective fire…I disagree. What would you call it then? Semi full auto?

To the layman, there is semi-auto and full auto. If you want to inject select fire or burst mode into the conversation, that's fine, but it would help if you clarified at the beginning that you see three categories where many know of only two.No it's selective fire…
Semi-auto or semi-automatic means that one round will fire once the trigger is pulled. Once you let go of the trigger, the gun will ready another round to shoot. You can only shoot as fast as you can pull the trigger. Basically, one pull = one shot.
FULLY-AUTOMATIC
As you might have guessed it, fully-automatic is when you pull and hold the trigger and multiple rounds get fired for as long as you hold the trigger until you are out of ammo in your magazine.
burst mode or burst-fire is a firing mode enabling the shooter to fire a predetermined number of rounds, usually two or three rounds on hand held weapons.
Rate of fire is what classifies it… I understand that it automatically loads the next round but that's not what classifies it.
