Selflessness seems in short supply these days. That you choose to defer your wants in favor of your daughter's needs is commendable and inspiring, good show!

But I am not selfless - at least according to 'liberals' (socialists) - because I don't want to pay for other people's children, their parents, or their own life expenses. Somehow I am responsible for them, but not for mine. When I complain, I am called mean and selfish because I "want them to die"!

They say I am responsible for others outside my family - but when I ask them how I am responsible, they say "you just are" (or the equivalent) and that it is my "duty".

I agree, things are a mess these days.

I still hold you in high regard, you're a good man :)

I have an acquaintance with a close relative whose is a hard-core liberal. He's a financially successful tradesman who ran his own business, but he's as lefty socialist as they come, very active in "progressive" political circles, donates to Bernie, never met a leftist cause or tax hike he didn't like.

Real selfless guy, right? Would never be the kind of guy who would buy a $100k RV and register it in his son's name in another state, to avoid paying his state sales tax, right? What a hypocrite...

I can respect someone who takes care of their own, and does their best to help others when they can, but I don't have much use for someone who only wants to help people with "other people's money".

That is something I often hear; "I don't mind paying taxes for..."

That's great - I often do not mind either (depends on what it is for). But - Taxes are not voluntary. I have a problem enacting laws that force other people to give up what they earned in order to help other people.

Charity, helping other people, is not a duty, it is voluntary, it is a gift. When earnings are taken by force (government is force) and given to another who has not earned it, then that is theft. Just because it is legal does not make it right or ethical. For that reason, I do have a problem with forcing others to pay taxes for services or goods not rendered to them, but rather to give something to others who have not earned it, no matter how much they need or desire it.

As the bard said:

The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.

If someone has no problem paying taxes for some social service, and they feel that others would or should feel the same way, then they should voluntarily donate those funds to that cause and others would too. You cannot, by the force of law, make people charitable.

Sounds like you are describing the Mormons. Not snark. They take care of their own and themselves. BTW I am not a member of the LDS faith - just an observation.
