Frequently, we receive requests for a hands on (not all lecture and videos), experiential type course that addresses the most common injuries, calamities and fears we all have as sportsmen. We are blessed to announce we have added an incredibly skilled and experienced Instructor to our staff who has been tasked with creating and teaching an 8 hour class that is relevant and actually useful for the participants. He is a firefighter, EMT and SWAT Team Medic In short, he's the guy we want with us in the boat, on the range or in the woods when something goes wrong.

The premise of the course, is that 911 is not necessarily an immediate option, the severity of the injury requires immediate action or trained first responders are en-route but may be hours away.... This is not a CPR class and is not the ARC Basic First Aid class. Those are essential and everyone should take them, but this course is far more focused on the trauma we are most likely to encounter. He is a fellow outdoors-men and has a good idea on where to start, but we also want your feedback...

What types of skills would you like to learn and actually drill on. Share some of your experiences or things you have witnessed that you would like us to incorporate. Initially, we are thinking of 4 categories and taking the top 1-3 from each category and creating this custom class...something like this:

Fishing - cold water immersion, hypothermia, hooks in body, knife wounds etc

Hunting- Arrow or sharp object penetrations, axe or hatchet trauma, knife wounds, compound fractures, sprains, severe blisters, snake bites etc

Tactical -
gunshot wounds, blood loss, stab wounds etc

General -
common vehicle accident injuries, heat exhaustion, dehydration, seizures, head trauma, choking, hypoglycemia, allergic reactions etc

Also, we are putting together kits for each application that we "recommend" and possibly for sale if there is interest...so, you won't have to research or guess which type of quick clot is best or what halo to buy...is this something that would be of interest to you as the participant?

First class is slated for January (date tbd) and is being designed over the next couple weeks so let us know what you want to know more about...we want to design this course how you want it...so let us hear your ideas and stories...thanks!

This is a great idea!

As a former volunteer fireman I have recommended people attend an EMT class at a community college for practical skills but this is much more focused.

The only items I might add (and these may be implied so ignore this if it is redundant)
  • How to perform a basic trauma assessment
    • Example: A member of our party just slipped off the trail and by the time we get to him he's unconscious, why, what's wrong, how do we help
  • Basic C-Spine precautions using improvised methods
    • Example: There is reason to believe the person has a neck injury but we don't have a c-collar handy
  • When, why and how to move an injured patient
    • Example: We need to move an injured kayaker out of the water after being bounced off the rocks with possible internal or head injuries to reduce hypothermia exposure
  • Do I go for help or wait here
    • Select a few situations and discuss the options of going for help or staying with the patient and how to assess each situation and make in informed/agonizing decision
The only other topic that came up just recently is recognizing the signs and onset of CO poisoning but that may not be too helpful in many situations.

Do you happen to have an email list I can get get added to? This is something I really need to take but I know that 2 months away is going to seem like 4 years...

Just a thought here - I know a few who were calling in coyotes and had close calls with cougars sneaking up on them so maybe include treatment options for a few animal caused injuries?

Everyone, thanks for the feedback...please keep the thoughts and ideas coming along...these are being customized in large part on the feedback we receive...while not final, it appear we will break this into two (possibly three) 8 hour classes that build upon each other...these will be training only- no "certifications" issued...just hands on learning and a course completion certificate from very high level instructors...

We are also considering offering a CPR/ First Aid that meets certain criteria and an official certification will be issued...these will be very aligned to what most of us have taken over the years...this is likely "phase 2"...

We are getting closer to publishing courses times, locations and dates for 2016. Class space will be limited and we will be offering a Christmas special...the prices will adjust upward so consider registering for one or all of the series of courses to take advantage of the promotion - more to follow on that in the coming weeks...
