I've heard 9x18 also called .380.

But then I've heard that some sort of conversion is necessary to shoot .380.

I have also heard this. I am not very familiar with this gun, I bought it in hopes to become so but it just doesn't fit my hand well.

3 kinds of common 9mm

9x19= common 9mm used all over the world, also called 9mm luger or parabellum
9x18= 9mm makarov, russian cartridge with larger diameter projectiles than western 9mm cartridges
9x17= .380 ACP

none of the 3 are interchangeable with each other.

Thanks, Jordan. I think I understand a little better now. They're all 9mm, but all different in other ways.

A friend has a .380 Makarov and I like it, but it sounds like 9mm Luger is the way to go. How difficult/expensive is 9x18 ammo?

Any idea if the 9x18 gun can be modified to accept the 9x19?

9x18 is not 380 . 380 is 9x17 . Some makarov were chambered in .380 ,probably for import to the USA commercial market.

9x18 (Makarov) "can" be converted to 9x17 (.380). Not advisable to go "up" to 9x19 (9mm Luger/Parabellum). Resulting pressures could be detrimental to the health of both the firearm, and operater.

These guns in Makarov caliber served as the sidearm for police and government agencies in Hungary for decades. They are just now being replaced by the CZ P-09 and P-07 manufactured under license domestically. Spare parts are widely available and since they are based on the Walther PP there are some tricks that can be done to make them more "refined". They used to sell for $99 back in the days now going for 3 bills plus depending on condition. Once the supply dries up their value should continue to rise. What makes this gun more appealing than other examples is that CAI put the import mark on the frame instead of the usual ugly billboard on the slide. GLWS
