FCC warns Amateur Radio operators

Recently I was talking to a local, licensed, HAM operator and he told me there are satellites the FCC can utilize to identify illegal operators or activity on HAM freqs but it is only used when there is a specific complaint or potential illegal activity heard and then it is hit and miss as the transmissions need to be frequent for positive ID of the location.

Don't forget you also have ARRL members and others, some with sophisticated gear and training, monitoring for Big Brother. Not that the government is inclined to let the masses use it but the ARRL has also steadfastly opposed voice encryption (PDF) on the amateur bands.

Amateur & Personal Radio Users Reminded Not to Use Radios in Crimes

The FCC Enforcement Bureau issued today an advisory to remind licensees and operators in the Amateur and Personal Radio Services that they may not use radio equipment to commit or facilitate crimes.

Here's part of the AP story that apparently helped prompt the warning:

An Associated Press review of public records, social media posts and videos shows at least 22 current or former members of the U.S. military or law enforcement have been identified as being at or near the Capitol riot, with more than a dozen others under investigation but not yet named. In many cases, those who stormed the Capitol appeared to employ tactics, body armor and technology such as two-way radio headsets that were similar to those of the very police they were confronting.

The AP's review of hundreds of videos and photos from the insurrectionist riot shows scores of people mixed in the crowd who were wearing military-style gear, including helmets, body armor, rucksacks and two-way radios.

Terrifying, right?

No victim in any gun control or posession legislation... yet they define "criminal" activity.

Considering that it is against the law for you to have radios with encryption you are absolutely correct they are not secure at all.

Yet is perfectly legal for .gov to have radio with encryption cause of public safety and all that jazz.


Having said that people that tend to want to use secure radio comms are probably going to be using a one time pad . Please note the the use of a one time pad will probably get the operator into trouble with the authorities because well that is encryption also ... Can't have a form of private communications that can't be monitored ... The 4th Amendment has been dead for a couple of generations and some change .
