I was on a business trip back east and had someone attempt to hack my webcam. Not sure if they succeeded or if the computer I was using just notified me of it being on. Needless to say, I have a post-it and tape over the lens now. If I need the camera, I take it off.
I was pretty p-o'ed when I found the message saying that my webcam was in the process of being activated, would I like to allow the user to have access... yeah, hell no.
Not that the webcam, at the time, catch me doing anything wrong, except being overweight and coming out of the shower...

Revelations like this and knowing any mobile device is simply an accessible live mic will get the sheep's attn for a few minutes then it is back to grazing.

So many abuses, a stream of them constantly, and the flock just gets burnt out hearing about all of them. So, they are eventually all get a pass without much objection.

Btw, this tech also applies to your mobile phone - in terms of video. That is indeed a 'webcam' and can be activated without your knowledge. So anywhere you are, smile for the camera and speak up.

The stumbling block is mass, automated data mining and storing all that info. Darpa/GIG almost have that all solved. Than just about every device/phone can be listening constantly for what you are saying.

Amazing stuff. One of my favorite old movies is Colossus: The Forbin Project. AI computer pretty much takes over everything and dominates man. Monitoring people via giant Concord cameras (the 60s)!

"RESTORE LINK TO GUARDIAN. RESTORE LINK OR ACTION WILL BE TAKEN." - Colossus had attitude.

I bet the NSA huddles around a monitor during breaks watching videos from the inside of my front pocket. Or if they are lucky they might see my left nipple when I have the phone in my Tee shirt pocket. As to being able to hear whats going on good luck with that in the Dump truck where I use it the most I'm lucky to hear squat with it held to my ear and the speaker on.

Like I say anything they could give a crap about LOL.

Yeah - I get it. But tech is getting so far advanced now with Face Recognition that every mobile device is a 'searching camera'. Kind of like Person of Interest, that sort of thing, but not for good purposes.

Um, now you see why I rip out the drivers for 'em on my systems... sorta like unplugging it, you can't turn it on if Winblows don't know it's there, right?

They have been able to use your mobile phone for surveillance since they were invented. The only fix is to physically remove the battery, not just turn off the phone. This is not new news.
