yep. you guys are definitely way late to the building game, unfortunately. around the time the AWB expired, you could get a basically unused Romy-G kit for $50, barrel and all. build parties were really parties then, when some guys were building 4-5 rifles in one go. few made complete receivers at the time, but flats were already available from Tapco and others.

kits really went up in the last year or so. I bought a couple AK-74 kits in mid 2011 for about $100/ea. now they're almost $300 or more. same old story with all other gun stuff.

and in the next couple years people will be saying the same thing about the prices now (you missed the boat when prices were a lot better)

Don't liberals have any thing better to do? Like making the world a better place by tackling real problems?
I'm just sure a father and son build team are going to use their build to go out on a mass shooting spree.

They are doing bigger and better things in NY, they are working on legislation to regulate... wait for it...... BOWLING SHOES!!!! they are working on legislation to make sure that bowling allies post sings saying that people can not wear bowling shoes outside in-case they get wet and slip on the lanes when they get back inside. This is what goes on in the libs heads, regulate ANYTHING were there is the POTENTIAL of someone getting hurt, weather its bowling shoes or firearms. They think we are all a bunch of idiots that have no idea how to take care or our self with out the interference of the government in every aspect of life. (Steps down form soapbox)

Probably not. Once the boat is missed it cannot be missed again. Surplus has dried up significantly. Importers are not bringing any kits in as the rifles are being bought up by people supplying the conflicts around the world. Unfortunately, this is a hobby that is most likely going to dry up and die. The days of AK home builds are coming to an end.

Ya'll missed the AK train. Kits are over twice as expensive at they were a few years ago. Original barreled kits are near extinct. I tried to host build parties twice....few if any were actually interested.

Very true, homebuilt AKs, while fun to say you did it yourself, and 8-10 years ago were quite inexpensive, are no longer the case.....Kits are no longer complete due to the AFT barrel ban, US barrels are hard to find these days, these days complete kits with all matching numbers are a couple hundred bucks, and a hundred more at least with the original barrel.

The Romy "G' kits, Egyptian Maadi and Bulgy AK74 about 4-5 years ago were really the last of the good complete kits...there were a handful of Russian Krink kits, matching but with chopped barrels, kinda regret not getting one of those.

you know why they're doing this, right? it's because of the indoor smoking ban in NY. they banned indoor smoking, which was probably the #2 activity that takes place at bowling alleys other than bowling. so people go outside to smoke in their bowling shoes, and slip on wet cement. a number of bowling alleys have already been sued because of it.

cause & effect, times three.

Was at Barnes and Nobel today and saw a copy of Harpers that had a good article that also talked about home building AR15's, but from a gun-rights perspective.
Sorry, but you will either need a subscription, or pick up a copy. But if your in the store, look for it. Just letting you know it's out there.
[Report] | How to Make Your Own AR-15, by Dan Baum | Harper's Magazine

Another magazine cover that caught my eye was called "Skeptic". It had a few really weird articles in it, but I grabbed a copy as it had a gun-control article in it that ended up being quite informative:
Skeptic » Reading Room » The Mass Murder Problem

One of the more interesting sections:
For example, Joe Zamudio was legally carrying a concealed handgun in Arizona one day when he heard gunshots. He ran toward the gunfire and saw a man with a handgun in a malfunction condition on top of another man, shouting, “I’ll kill you, you motherf****r. I’ll kill you.” Leaving his weapon in the holster Zamudio grabbed the man’s wrist and instructed him to put down the weapon, which he did. The man was Roger Sulzgeber, who in addition to retired Army Colonel Bill Badger and Patricia Maisch, saved many lives by tackling Jared Loughner after Loughner’s weapon malfunctioned approximately one minute after opening fire. Sulzgeber’s aggressive comments were an emotional response to witnessing Loughner shoot 20 people and nearly being shot himself. Once Sulzgeber put down the weapon, Zamudio helped Badger, Sulzgeber, and Maisch to restrain Loughner for about four minutes until the police arrived. Contrary to press reports Zamudio did not almost shoot the wrong person, as his weapon was never removed from his holster. If Zamudio had been an armed off-duty police officer, instead of an armed citizen, then he probably would have behaved similarly in the chaos of the situation. The real lesson is, if you have any doubt about taking a shot, then do whatever it takes to resolve your doubts before shooting or just get away and let the police handle the situation. Ultimately, if Loughner’s weapon hadn’t malfunctioned, then Zamudio would have likely been the first armed person on scene to engage Loughner for the next four minutes. As such, armed citizens with the proper training could stop up to 30 to 40 deaths by mass murder per year on average.
