[QUOTEJust recently, I spotted one preying on an innocent male victim][/QUOTE]
One only becomes 'prey' if he allows it to happen or wanders unprotected into the dangerous world of the Cougar.....

However there is a new species of Cougar that is evolving. One that had planned to mate for life but lost it's male companion due to death or other circumstances. This new breed has adequate resources for survival and is well equipped to re-enter the jungle. Because of it's years of experience it is considerably more dangerous than it's male counterpart, is very sly and cunning and bears considerable watching. It is very selective and will take whatever new companion it chooses. Even the strongest male can fall victim as it displays a larger more comfortable cave/home it has created, ample sustenance and comfort. Also because of it's years of coexistence with a dedicated male, and possible domination by same, it will no longer allow itself to be controlled and will, in fact, dominate any new male it takes as a companion. This new breed displays an insatiable desire to mate and any incapacity, carelessness or neglect by the male will result in his immediate ejection by the now dominate female.

ODFW biologist estimate 1.5 deer, calfs and or fawns per week per cougar with a population of around 6500 cougar. no wonder you don't see game everywhere anymore. one suggestion to ODFW was issuing a free cougar tag to every person who purchases a hunting license.

And with a 1% success rate for casual hunters, and an 80% success rate for hunters with hounds, the cougar kill actually went down.

No doubt true BUT I think it would be interesting to know how many active and dedicated hunters actually used dogs for cougar hunting. I can't imagine it was very high number to begin with.

At the OUSDA (Oregon United Sporting Dogs Assoc.) hound hunters convention there are about 150 members who still show up every year, even though it's been 20 years since we could hunt big game. If bear and cougar were made legal again for hound hunting I'd estimate that number would be more like 500, and there'd be another 500 non-member hound hunters. A couple of cougar a year each and your problem would start to go away real quick.

I have a 70 acre property now out near Spirit Mountain Casino. I was surprised to find a large cougar track below my front window 5 feet from the side of the house. Then a month or so ago my 12 year old daughter shone a light out by where my Joyner buggy was parked 75 feet from the house. She yelled that she thought she saw cat eyes, then changed her mind and said she thought it was a cougar. I laughed and didnt get up because i wasnt seriously thinking it could be a cougar but she bugged me all night and the next morning made sure first thing that i go over by the buggy to take a look. Sure enough, cougar tracks all over around the buggy, I sniffed it all over really good because i was sure it pissed on my buggy but i couldnt smell anything so maybe it didnt. But apparently we have a very curious cat that probably weighs in excess of 150 lbs. My plan was to shoot it first chance i got but my daughters who are cat lovers apparently have vetoed me and banned all hunting of cats on my property LOL
