Representatives,
I strongly OPPOSE ESSB 6288, creating the Office of Firearm Violence Prevention. Please vote NO on ESSB 6288.
  1. There is no gun violence epidemic. Our current homicide rate is the lowest in our lifetimes. We have never been this safe from homicide since the late 1950s! (BJ Campbell)
  2. Gun homicide rate is down 49% since peaking in 1993, but the public perceives the opposite (Pew Research)
  3. In 2017, there were only 228 murders in Washington, and a mere 134 used a firearm (FBI)
  4. University of Washington admits that a whopping 75.3% of firearm deaths in 2017 are from suicide--NOT gun violence (UW)
  5. The taxpayer-funded Washington Mass Shootings Work Group Report specifically recommended "accessible and effective mental health services" as an "effective means of intervening against a potential perpetrator of mass shootings" (WA Mass Shootings Work Group)
If you want to save lives, follow Washington's research recommendation and focus instead on providing better mental health services. Focus instead on reducing crime.
Please vote NO on ESSB 6288.
