downloading songs from iPhone to iTunes on computer

so i purchased songs on my iPhone, but they don't transfer to iTunes on my desktop. my desktops actually a iMac. anyone know how to achieve this? I've done it once before, but its a pain and i can't remember.

You may need to 'authorize' your iMac so you can transfer the music from your iPhone.

Here's the thing that's stupid. I have my phone plugged into the iMac. I have iTunes pulled up. Phone is patched to iTunes. So why can't I just synch what I already paid for through iTunes?
