Easy way to tell if it is a firearm, is if you had to complete a 4473 to obtain it.

Hint, most are not considered firearms.
 
The definition of firearm changes depending on which law is being considered. For example Washington's definition is different from the federal Gun Control Act definition and both are different than the federal National Firearms Act definition. Generally speaking cap and ball black power muzzleloading revolvers are not federal short barreled rifles with a shoulder stock attached.

I have a weird fascination with cylinder action carbines, bp or otherwise, although fewer designs than even the automatic revolvers were made... I like the idea.

Generally speaking, traditional black powder guns are not considered firearms by law and are not subject to the same regulation.
