FreeCad can be overwhekming for basic 2D drafting so narrow your focus as far as help files. If you go that route.
Yeah, I'm a 50 yr old mechanical engineer. Went from board and Cadkey in 1984 or so. SolidWorks, Inventor n NXNastran since. For 2D keep it simple. Bootleg old, old AutoCad 2004 or so is the best bang. Especially if you have any drafting experience.It does have a steep learning curve to be sure, but no CAD program I've tried has NOT had a steep curve. ;-)
I've recently been doing more 2d stuff and for my amateur needs, Qcad is proving really useful. There's a free version and more featureful pro version at about $40. I've been using the pro version because why not at that price? QCAD - 2D CAD
