There seem to be as many arguing that it DOES require that all US gun owners be reported to the UN as the one that argue that it DOES NOT. Here's another article that says it's essentially the same as existing import and export laws in the U.S.:http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-weisser/un-small-arms-treaty_b_4337810.html. Yes, it is Huffington Post so is suspect. But it's just as valid as other opinion pieces floating around out there.

What really ticks me off is those who profess to be conservatives that spew nonsense to make conservatives and gun owners look stupid. When we repeat unverified information, it only serves to further the goals of those trying to discredit us.

Treaties between governments only apply to the relations those government have between themselves and to foreign trade etc. They do not and have never applied to US citizens on US soil unless steps are taken in BOTH houses of congress to pass laws to be signed by the President that comply with the external treaties. No American President, not even Obama, can sign executive orders forcing Americans on American soil to comply with a foreign treaty that has not been codified into US law. Even when Senate ratifies a treaty it does not become codified into US law. To become a law it has to be passed by both houses, signed by the President, is has to comply with the Constitution (Courts) etc. Same as its always been.

Having said that we could sign a treaty with Austria for example in which we are barred from purchasing Austrian guns and gun parts for import into the United States. Glock would be forced to produce all of their parts in the US and assemble them in the US for the US market.

Exactly. Spain, back in the 70s, made it illegal to import Japanese motorcycles, Kawasaki, Honda, Yamaha etc., and that caused Japan to open factories in the US to build them, thus bypassing said law.

That is why those bikes are made/assembled in the US now.

I see this treaty as another attempt to make some people look as though they have done "something" to show that their hand wringing has actually accomplished something. The treaty is about the illusion of states not selling directly to Idi Amin Inc, or other such entities.

Not that a certain president and secretary of state would run guns to Syria through a sattelite Libyan embassy or anything like that !

Apparently the Arms Treaty Negotiations are taking place in Cancun

Cause why would you want to be in say a nations capital when you could be sipping umbrella drinks at the beach.

"The first annual meeting of the nations that have ratified the 2014 Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) opened on Monday, August 24 at a spa in Cancún, Mexico. ...

The meeting was originally supposed to be in Mexico City, but wouldn't you rather spend your off-hours by the pool? "
