Last week, my dad and his 16 month old, 130lb Rottweiler were attacked by a German Shepherd that was loose in Beaverton. Of course, this was the one time that my dad wasn't carrying (funny how that happens). Anyways, he had to beat the dog to get it to leave, suffering only one rather minor bite. Our Rottweiler is fine, and had his patience seriously tested.

He talked to police afterwards, who said almost exactly this: "Well I'm not going to tell you to shoot anything, but if you are attacked by a dog, and your dog is being attacked, you wouldn't be wrong to shoot it in defense."

It should be noted that the threshold to use force against a violent pet (property) is far lower than using force against another person. This should go without saying.

It should, but we're in the land of "Your rights end where my feelings begin".

My family has been raising high dollar Rottweilers for 40+ years. Never had an incident. Sister has completed degrees (two countries) in herding ducks/geese, sheep, etc. with her rotts.

Only thing I can say? Never tell a rottweiler they are not a lap dog.
