BATF measures from the bolt face. They run a dowel down the barrel with the bolt closed. Mark it and measure!

Btw if anyone needs help cutting a barrel down and putting on a new bead... I do it cheap. Looks factory:)
 
I did it with a hack saw with a new blade. Cut a half inch extra then filed it. Turned out so well you couldn't tell from factory. This was an old 60 dollar 16 gauge though so I didn't really care about butchering it. My son helped me and it was actually kind of fun
 
What might be interesting to find out is if some one could then thread the muzzle to take a screw in choke. I'm thinking my Frankinchester take down trench gun would benefit from a screw in rifled choke for shooting slugs!
