Been thinking I need to "Build" a full house custom Ruger MK-IV, just dipping my toes into this new wonderment, and not really knowing how far down the rabbit hole this might lead, I figured I would ask all the fine folks here!
So:
1) does one need to start with a basic pistol to pull parts from, like frame and upper receiver and barrel?
2) are there aftermarket sources for most if not all parts, and if so, how much of the Ruger is actually left, or even better no Ruger at all right from the start, kind of like a full custom 10/22?
3) is this sort of like doing an 80% where there is machining to complete, or is it enough to source the parts and then fit them all to then qualify as ether a home build or at least an 80%?

I appreciate all input here,a nd welcome advice, especially in avoiding mistakes and pitfalls, not really sure the direction I might want to take this, but am feeling like I really need a full house mighty mouse race gun of some sort, and cost isn't even a consideration when it comes to cool! LOL

Thanks and let the games begin!

Edit:
Please share your fav. sources?resources for parts, and accessories, as well as experience and advice on said parts and vendors!

The grip frame is the place to start, and it's the unserialized part , so less hassle to get.
Unfortunately, the grip frame is also not usually available used. The uppers are everywhere, even tho that's the actual " firearm" . BassAckwards, but that's how it is.

Mags would be something to stock up on . I have the older mkII style, and I think I have between 15 /20 mags. Easier to load at home, and haul it all to the range. I end up reloading a couple on the bench too, but it's nice to have a stack ready.

Yea if you want the best pistol it would be very hard to beat a VQ - I believe you can even customize it a bit when you order one.

If you start with a Ruger, your goal will be to get as close to a VQ as possible so I would cut out the cost of the Ruger and just buy one built.

I will say that my MK4 with trigger and bolt kit were every bit as accurate as my VQ, but my hunter model didn't have a threaded barrel.

That's what I was looking for, THANKS for the links! :D
DO IT!!!!

Where are you guys finding those slick charging handle/bolts?
Also, where are you finding those Muzzle Comps?

I think I have settled on a configuration that checks all the boxes for me, just trying to settle all the smaller details and get an order or three in!
So far, i'm just under a Grand, but am figuring it will likely end up around $1300 maxed out!

On ebay. Seller is in WA. Great product. It's the only charging handle I'll use.

My current speed steel setup.

Ruger MK4 22/45 frame with VQ trigger kit and a flat face trigger shoe from TK.
Factory MK4 5.5 inch "hunter" model upper with fluting.
Mounted a pic rail under the barrel so I could run a TK thumb ledge.
Maddmacs precision tactical lowpro rear dovetail mount for a Sig Romeo 1Pro.

I've ran comps before and I don't really notice a difference, so I currently don't use them. Plus, I'm lazy and don't want to clean rimfire comps. 🤣

If you get a lower or a whole pistol you can swap uppers Tactical Solutions is my go to and you can get bolts off Ebay under $50. This is my dads Ruger Standard and can be turned back to it's original configuration in a few minutes. I just wanted a threaded upper to run it suppressed and came threaded and with adjustable sights .
