Personally it should be lifetime ban on hunting for both of them.

In Germany the lifetime ban would include ANY ownership of a firearm, one to three years jail time and after that, one to three years' Rückerstattungsarbeit - restitution work - as required by the Bezirkforstmeisterei - State Forestry Commission.

I thought they could confiscate guns, vehicle, and any other equipment involved plus give jail time for poaching. Wouldn't killing five illegal elk and leaving them to rot be considered poaching?

We grew up poor and my Dad hunted or fished for most of our table food and he thought poachers should be shot. This was back in the 50s and 60s but he was serious.
