Perhaps, but like Ron basically said the police aren't going to know this. They will be more interested in clearing the case. The gun will go to the property room and an attempt will be made to contact the victim of the crime, unless the gun has been seized for evidence.
The police will not be concerning themselves over what is a now essentially a civil matter between the victim and his insurance company.
