I think that one can certainly point to the tree hugging, feel good lefties that voted for banning the use of hunting dogs in cougar hunting, as the main reason why the cats are moving into populated areas.
The expanding numbers of young males are looking for their own territory, and since hunting pressure is way down, it's inevitable that they would make their way into urban areas.
If a young child is hurt or killed by one, the headlines will be;
"How could this tragedy happen!"
"We need to destroy those wild animals to protect are children!"
"Why isn't the city/state doing something, right now!"

Just give it some time and wolves will make there way there. OR-7 has at least 3 pups in southern Oregon and there's another confirmed pack outside of Bend. Won't be long before they are around or in Portland, Salem and Eugene.

due to the california contingent pouring cash into a bill they fostered to stop the use of hounds to hunt we have this problem. it isn't a dem vs rep issue it is an uniformed bias that got this thru. people need to realize there is plenty to fear from all political parties not just one.

As for the problem of the cat overpopulation we are currently having, I agree with some of the others who previously said it will take a tragedy (of a kid being killed) for this to be addressed. But the do-gooders will likely be successful in blaming humans for moving into THEIR domain.

It's no big secret the deer and elk populations have suffered, even though fewer hunters even bother hunting anymore.

As soon as the do-gooders started running those ads on TV showing the cute little kittens frolicking around with each other, then the bad, evil hunter with his pack of dogs implicitly shooting their mother out of a tree the vote was a forgone conclusion. A perfect example of a well run, well executed disinformation campaign aimed right at the uneducated, misinformed, albeit useful idiot.
