ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- New details have been revealed about the shooting death of a St. Joseph police officer during a recent training exercise.

St. Joseph Police Officer Dan De Kraai was shot and killed on Sept. 15 during a training exercise. Police Chief Chris Connally said De Kraai was shot in the back at about 2:15 p.m. while another officer was demonstrating something to him.

St. Joseph Shooting Report

In a news release on Wednesday, the St. Joseph police said De Kraai and officer Jason Strong left the training area to go get a drink at a nearby convenience store. While on break, the officers transitioned from Simunition-altered weapons used in the exercise to their regular weapons.

The report said upon returning to the exercise area and before entering the building, De Kraai asked to have a Simunitions round demonstrated on him. Witnesses said he expressed the wish to know what being struck by one felt like before experiencing it in the training scenario.

Strong failed to realize he had not transitioned back to a Simunitions-modified weapon and shot De Kraai in the back with his duty weapon prior to a safety check being performed, the report said. De Kraai was pronounced dead at a St. Joseph hospital.

The St. Joseph Police Department does allow for demonstrations of defense and control weapons, but the demonstrations must be done in a controlled environment with instructors trained in those areas directing the exercise.

Strong remained on administrative leave as of Wednesday and police officials said there is no time line for his return to duty.
