At a Big 5 I went to recently, they had 2 870s. The first was marketed as an 8 shot and had the long squarish front hand grip. Number 2 was a 7 shot with a shorter grip like you generally see on Mossberg 500s. Does anyone know what the model #s are for these and if there are any real differences between the 2?

Weird - it almost sounds like one was a police model and one was an express seven-shot model. However, I think the police model is seven shots too.

Are you sure they were both Remington's? There are some chinese-made copies out there (IAC? not sure) that look very similar.

Ive noticed that also. The Gun Broker on 82nd had three Remington shotguns, one said 870 Express Magnum, and the other two just said 870, but all looked exactly the same except the pump grip was different, as the op described. All three shot 3" shells, with extended mag tube. Wierd.
