I work in N Portland in the vicinity of the MODA center and have noticed over the last 5 or 6 years how the environment has been changing. Ten years ago I really never worried to much about my surroundings even if I were around in the evening or real early morning. Maybe it's just that I'm getting older and not as secure in my physical capabilities as I used to be(getting old sucks!). I am outside quite a bit during the day going between buildings, so I have gotten back into carrying at work.

Well, I was invited to attend the Blazer game last night which happens several times thru out the season. Once in the parking garage I was heading into the game and remembered I was still carrying. I ran back to the car to drop my pistol off. For those of you not familiar with attending events there, security checkpoints are at all entrances(metal detectors, wands, bag searches...). I had looked up their policy some time ago and was not surprised that weapons were not allowed unless you were an active LEO(off duty). Since it was on my mind as I went through the checkpoint(Club Level) I inquired about Licensed Concealed Carry. The usher told me that if you present your credentials prior to going through the metal detector , they will contact a supervisor to verify them and pass you through.

Has anyone else had any experience/contact with like matters?

Disclose your carrying right there in front of everyone in line?

I applaud the effort, but there has got to be a better way to go about it...

Next time I go, I'll make a test run to see what the actual procedure is. Who knows, the usher could have been blowin' smoke...They may just escort me from the premises.

Having been around for quite some time, it's kinda funny how many people are completely oblivious to a lot that goes on around them. There certainly is no need to draw attention to yourself when presenting credentials to an usher. Handing a drivers license with a CHL hardly warrants a second thought by most bystanders. Unless of course they tackle you and have the police arrest you.... Any way, I prefer the idea of being prepared when compressed into a relative small location with a multitude of other people. Like I said, my physical abilities just aren't what they used to be. The very few that may witness an exchange at the entrance is nothing compared to being able to defend oneself and loved ones in the event of a crisis that would warrant such actions.

It will depend greatly on how well the usher knows the policy, if there is one. What are the odds the usher is anti-gun?

Metal detectors are always there. Like I said, the usher I talked to could be blowin' smoke... Maybe he was taking the easy way out and the supervisor will come in and be the heavy and escort me out... The website has stated that for quite some time now, but in light of events over the last few years policies change.

I think its time we start standing up for our rights to protect ourselves and let the lefties get used to it. The more they bark and whine and cry, the more we need to match their intensity... not with yelling, but with calm, dignified, responsible behavior. By bringing it up in public(calmly), we can set the platform.

It depends on the show.
Been there for a concert they didnt check anyone...
Exactly, it depends on the contract, if the performer or show requires screening, then they are deployed. Been there plenty of times, carrying inside the Moda Center... Never an issue... If there's screening, a quick trip to the car, lock it away in its strong box and pop back inside...

Just scope out the situation ahead of time and take the necessary actions...

Thats what I do, but its really inconvienient and often not practical in some scenarios, in those cases you might have to leave the gun at home and go unarmed all evening.

Usher probably thought you were in some branch of law enforcement and confused the question/situation with a citizen conceal carrying.

Always arrive early, always scope out the situation. That's why I always drive to such events...

Heck I even Nutcrackered at Keller with my Commander... Just cause I could...

Yeah, I'm not about to trust their barely above minimum wage ushers responses to policy questions.

The website says no guns for CHL, and also no knives.

Showing up at the metal detector and hoping a manager will allow you in against their written policy sounds like a bad idea to me. So does identifying yourself as carrying a gun, surrounded by people waiting in line to get in, and expecting an usher, without decision making powers, to handle it without making a scene.

If you feel unsafe around their property, let them know why they lost your business.

It used to be it was only for the big games or events now it seems it's every thing there.
I've taken knoves in there and they have just checked it and let me have it back.

But I won't support them if they don't support my freedoms

Only thing I went to in the last several years was Frozen on ice for my daughter.
It's tough because I want to take my kids to stuff like that, but that area is a complete seite hole and I don't like not being able to protect my babies

similar situation here, we don't live in a cave so to speak. I took my teen daughter to a pop concert there. left the gun at home because of this... walked in and no wanding no pat downs no nothing except they glanced inside handbags. o_O and this was a major act.

Similar experience here, they checked the wife's purse, waved me right through, Commander and all... Go figure, the Mrs. Must appear as more of a threat than me... Mr. Greyman...
