I guessing it wasn't the magnet that cause the weapon to fire but the abrupt stop and extremely High G forces on the firing mechanism that caused it to go off when the front of the pistol slammed into the magnet. Think about how fast that weapon had to be going to over come the gravity acting on it while in flight. Now think about the firing pin traveling at that speed being stopped instantly (well pretty instantly since only the scar on the Spring tube and the magnet absorbed any of the impact) The G forces would have made that firing pin weigh maybe 20+ times its real weight SO when the rest of the pistol stopped inert would place the firing pin in motion.
 
That's why I roll with my Non-Metallic Glock!! Prevents these things from happening. The only thing I have to be careful of is letting it sit on the dash and melt!!! Haha
