When coating a rail, how do you prevent filling the areas that are marked?

The letters and numbers on the rail.
I see that cerakote, for one, is used to coat them but how do they protect the characters and still change the color?

I can't comment on cerakote, but I've used Brownell's GunKote many times on my build projects, and when applied properly, the layer is very thin and does not obscure markings on any of the parts.
