Good adviceI bought two Charters (new) back in the late 70s. A .22 Pathfinder, and a .44 special Bulldog. The Bulldog fell to pieces on the third shot. The hammer and several other parts fell out on the ground. Amazingly, I was uninjured. Good thing, because I was alone in the woods and hours from help in the days before cell phones. I couldn't hit anything with either gun. Triggers were very heavy and gritty. I wouldn't recommend a Charter in .38 (or anything else). I'd recommend a used Smith or Ruger.
