Ceasefire Oregon Reports is back after the summer hiatus and we have much to share with you!
Oregon News:
- IP 43, The Campaign to Ban the Future Sale of Assault Weapons and High Capacity Magazines: Most of you closely followed IP 43, the effort to ban the future sale or transfer of assault weapons and high capacity magazines. Ceasefire Oregon worked hand-in-hand with IP 43 (Lift Every Voice Oregon or LEVO) throughout the spring and into July. Working together, we trained almost 1,000 people to gather signatures for the IP 43 petition and educated people throughout Oregon about IP 43. Unfortunately, the petition ran out of time but LEVO gathered the support of thousands of Oregonians who are committed to reducing the presence and availability of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in Oregon.
- LEVO and Ceasefire Oregon are now working to introduce legislation in Oregon in 2019 that is very similar to IP 43. We are kicking off the campaign at a Lobby Day and Rally during Oregon's "Legislative Days" on Tuesday, September 25, at a rally and lobby day at the Capitol Building in Salem.
- JOIN US in Salem on Tuesday by clicking this link.
- We are very excited to have Vision Quilt join us at the rally in Salem!
- SAP, self-styled "Second Amendment Protection or Preservation" petitions, have popped up throughout Oregon. These maneuvers attempt to give county sheriffs the authority to interpret parts of the US Constitution (violating the Supremacy Clause) as well as the ability to not enforce gun laws with which the sheriff disagrees (violating Oregon's pre-emption law). Read our short blog to see if your county has a SAP and what you can do about it.
- September is Sucide Prevention Awareness Month. In Oregon, more than 80% of all gun deaths are suicides. Learn how you can #BeThe1To help stop this epidemic.
- The Oregon gun lobby has submitted three initiative petitions for the 2020 election.
- IP 8 is an attempt by state gun lobbyists to silence Oregonians who want to pass strong, effective laws that will reduce or prevent gun violence.
- IP 8 would nullify firearm-related laws that might be passed in the 2019 legislative session and prohibit the voters from passing future legislation that will reduce gun violence.
- IP 8 has gathered the required 1,000 sponsorship signatures and should receive a draft ballot title on September 25.
- IP 6 and IP 11 are initiative petitions that would force Oregon public schools to teach sixth graders to handle guns "if no adult is available" and "how semi-automatic weapons operate" so students can learn that removing a firearm magazine doesn't mean the gun is unloaded.
- IP 6 and IP 11 will not require education about safe storage, suicide prevention, or conflict de-escalation.
- Both initiative petitions create taxpayer-financed jobs for the gun business.
- Neither petition has yet received the sponsorship signatures required to forward.
- IP 8 is an attempt by state gun lobbyists to silence Oregonians who want to pass strong, effective laws that will reduce or prevent gun violence.
