So, I have been engaging in a flatulent foray on various antique firearms sites tonight; primarily for a M712 or the like, but other gun goodness. I came across this curious fellow:

Can anyone tell me about these? The maker does not ring a bell at all. Obviously for the whaling industry, and for launching harpoons and the like, but curious about specifics, the make, and other such artifacts from the time. (And, tangentially, perhaps an exploration of other seafaring-focused firearms.)

Thanks much. :)

P.S. I am aware whaling is controversial in the modern times. This was not the case in times passed and my curiosity for history is just that, wrinkles and all. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm not going to bother denying it; I'd like to touch one off. Not at a large aquatic mammal, of course, but just sending to downrange to see what it does. Within the bounds of safety and legality, of course.

Yes, whaling gun. Probably in the 27 lb range. Commonly used in Alaska by native people (Inuit - "the people", just about every tribe called themselves, "the people", and everyone else some sort of enemy. "Eskimo" means "eater of raw meat". All the Indian tribal names we have is what the tribe we ran into first called them) and used up to the 1940s/50s as I recall, when the last maker/loader/reloader of the harpoons died and no one else wanted to learn the trade. Reportedly kicked like three mules! Seen write-ups of them, but no idea where now, a long time ago. Drop the NRA Dope Page a line with photos and see what they have. Too bad it's incomplete.
