CBS Sports has announced it won’t air a controversial 30-second commercial because it took on a “political nature” for featuring a young girl reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Washington state real estate broker Dave Retter, of the Horse Heaven Round-Up, created the ad to run during CBS’s broadcast of the Wrangler Champions Challenge rodeo, Tri-City Herald reported. In it, Retter’s 4-year-old granddaughter recites the pledge.

“We just thought it’s around Sept. 11, Patriot Day, and rodeo is as patriotic a sport as it comes,” Retter told the Herald. “We’ve had so many positive responses, we felt it would be fun to run something positive.”

In an email to fair director Dave Praino, CBS Sports rejected the commercial because it is political in nature.

“It’s amazing,” Retter said. “I’m still trying to scratch my head to figure out what’s political about the Pledge of Allegiance.”

Praino told the Herald he has tried unsuccessfully to get further clarification from CBS Sports.

Retter substituted the rejected ad with one that features a World War II veteran who went on to become an agent for the company.
