Here is an investigative report by CBS News, of the current gun crisis in Chicago. CBS claims that the situation is not getting any better. Their reporter found black gangs in Chicago all heavily armed with guns.

What should our society do about this gun problem??

The Guns of Chicago

How'd they pass the background checks if there known gang members?

Did CBS explain it?

And how did they get concealed handgun licenses, as I bet Chicago is similar to Portland where in you can't open carry without one.

How did CBS explain that one?

Walk the streets at 2:00am to show us how successful his programs are.

But you forget that before becoming Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel was a key advisor to President Clinton at the White House. And he served as the White House Chief of Staff, during the Obama Administration. He is considered by many to be a genius.

If he cannot solve this problem, then who can??

The reporter was quite aghast when she saw some of the guns the thugs had. She pointed out that some were firearms that are illegal for anyone to even possess in Chicago.

You know, it is sort of ironic how much the liberal media hates the term "illegal alien", but absolutely loves to save "illegal guns".

Regarding your post and especially the last sentence, it is about time we wake up and understand those in power DO NOT want to solve the problem.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel appears to have no answer to the never ending wave of violence. What should a Mayor do, in a situation like this?

I think Rahm Emmanuel and every single one of his "ilk" should all literally run off the cliff that they've been driving their cultivated gaggle of lemmings towards all these years.

After they all thoroughly (and repeatedly) punch themselves in the face.

The problem couldn't in any way be associated with nearly a century of liberal, socialistic, democratic control...

If you keep doing the same thing over and over and over again, expecting different results, there's a word for that... Insanity...

What needs to happen is the gang problem needs to be addressed and taken care of. If the authorities were to enforce the existing laws (local, state and federal), me thinks they could clean up the streets of Chicago...

But we know that as long as democrats rule Chicago, it'll be situation "same".

Activate Rudi's squads to go to Chicago with orders to shoot gang members on sight.

BTW... Chicago has always been corrupt, gangland, Daly clan, etc.

What needs to happen is the gang problem needs to be addressed and taken care of.

In the story one official claims that they indeed tried to do it. They said that the streets had previously been controlled by large, organized gangs, often with regional or even national affiliations. They said that they went after these big gangs, and shut them down. arresting their leaders. But what they claim then happened is that numerous small, neighborhood gangs formed, to fill in the vacuum.

Some are saying that this has actually made the gun violence situation worse. For you now have all of these many small gangs vying for power, and constantly coming into conflict with each other over their territories and drug sales.

There does not appear to be an easy answer here.

They don't have a gun crisis, they have a scumbag crisis, but when the cops shoot the scumbags everyone cries about it.

Well, but we cannot become like the Philippines, and have vigilantes killing scumbag drug dealers, and placing signs on their bodies. Certainly there must be some solution that is short of going that route.

This Phillipines drug lord was killed by Batman:

This drug pusher was killed by the vigilante who simply goes by the name "M". He suffocated the pusher by wrapping his head in plastic.

I doubt anyone with an objective view of his career would use the term "genius".
That aside, "who can?" is a legitimate question.
The short answer is "no one". No one who is willing to do what is really necessary to fix Chicago, or any other of the cesspools of large cities, will ever see a position of authority that would allow them to do so.
The conditions there have been created over several generations and reversing it will likely take as long or longer.
First off, quit rewarding the behaviors that propagate the problem; no longer will more babies equal more welfare money. Yes some will suffer, maybe even die, but others will learn and become self-sufficient. Harsh?? Of course, but that's the fix.
Second, punish those that need it. Prison in the Arpaio model, only harsher. Enough food to survive, enough heat to not freeze, and enough roof to keep most of the rain off. Work, real work, to get even that. Make sure when they leave they won't be wanting to come back. Third time in, maybe even the second, and you don't get out. Refuse to work because you aren't leaving anyway and starve to death. Leave a rope in the cell for those that want out early. Out in the trash heap the next morning. Next!! Coddling criminals has gone on far too long. Prison isn't a threat it's a vacation.
Third, give businesses some incentive to move to a location where they can hire the people who want jobs. By incentive I don't mean tax breaks and subsidized wages, but the freedom to fire anyone that won't work without threat of a lawsuit. Freedom to pay minimal wage for minimal skills. There is a line between sweat shop and real value of work for value of pay. Make sure it isn't crossed. Those that want to work and learn will progress, those that don't, starve.
None of these ideas are going to win me any friends, but I don't see any other way to solve the problem. And you can't just fix Chicago. This has to be done nationwide or the worst of the worst will relocate to the next city for the handouts. Actually you can. Who cares if they leave?? The end result for Chicago is what you are after. The next city can take them in or start to reclaim their town too.

If good people are caught between a feckless justice system that refuses to protect them (and in fact increasingly works against them) and animals running the streets.... If caught red-handed, shouldn't they be summarily shot down like the rabid animals they are?

The question of the ages:

How much unabated evil are good women and men supposed to endure before it all breaks?

@Stomper thanks for the reminder. Something I left out; encourage self-protection. Obviously the police can't be everywhere all the time. Get the people to take care of themselves. Self defense, neighborhood watch with some authority. Anyone who takes down a criminal is celebrated, not vilified. And I include property crimes as well as personal violent crimes. Use of force laws need to allow for the protection of property. The property that people have was usually acquired by trading time out of their life for it. Whether at a job or in barter, time was the currency. Stealing or vandalizing property is stealing time as surely as killing someone is.
