It is very sad this happened. However, it was preventable by following basic rules of gun safety. If you're shooting with friends that aren't following safe shooting practices, you need to say something about it. Things like this shouldn't happen, and now there is a family missing its father.

After coming very close to being shot in the back of the head with a .22lr rifle that belonged to a friend of my then teenaged son, I don't/rarely shoot with people that I haven't checked out their gun handling before. In fact, during a recent visit with family from Ark, I was shocked to see that my SIL (I've shot with him 20yrs ago) hadn't schooled my grandkids in strict gun safety... I had to keep reminding the teen grandson not to pick up and point the (supposedly empty with no mag in it) handgun back at us at the table when it was his turn to shoot, and also not to stand in front of the table (downrange) where we were handling firearms. I'll bet they thought I was a PITA but my SIL was very supportive of my safety education/training efforts. BTW, the 11yr old granddaughter was much more careful than the teen boy. I think he's been playing too much warrior games on Xbox and having Airsoft wars with his dad. He really needs to know the diff in care required.

Drove road 1500 and 1600 in the Yacolt Burn State Forest this morning with two grandsons. We were checking the condition of some favorite shooting spots, and I was pleased that DNR had eliminated a gravel pile at one of the most alarming shooting spots [downhill, overlooking a valley with two roads in sight]. As we walked all but the one site with active shooting, we talked about the best place to put up targets, risk of ricochet, height of backstops, why so many shooters leave trash behind, etc. I talked safety when they played with toy guns and, even now, talk safety when we're just checking out places. I want that to be burned into their brains for the rest of their lives. I also want them to be responsible citizens that live by the golden rule.

Personally, the firearms and ammo go back in their "safe space" before any booze/beer/wine comes out.

I never had a lot of guys wanting to go fishing in the boat with me for a similar reason. 20 years in the CG and I've seen what alcohol and boating does so I always had a no booze on the boat rule and waited until I was back at the pier before cracking a cold one.

Sorry to hear about this. Accidents happen all the time, guns, vehicles, boats. That is why they are called accidents. Just go a boat launch and see how many boats end up on the ramp or vehicles in the water just because some one forgot something. We all need to practice what we preach. Such a tragedy. The family lost a father and husband. The person who pulled the trigger will now have to live the rest of their life knowing they killed a friend. Total loss. So Sad.

Mistakes happen....
Unlike most things , a mistake made with a firearm , can have permanent consequences.
Always think though your actions when handling a firearm.

For those who are making comments on this incident , please remember that this is tragedy for the friends and family of those involved.
Also there are members here on the forum that may know the family or man who died.

You need training to operate any assault rifle. That's why they train you how in the Army.

WTF does the type of rifle have to do with anything? The four rules of gun safety cover everything, even guns that have fake nick names made up by anti gunners.

It's irritating that the media loves the terms AK, AR and assault rifle and the world talks about "gun violence." When a revolver is used, they label it as "gun" violence. I've owned/carried guns for over 70 years and never has one of them shown any violence...much like my cars, coffee cups or Oreo cookies. The UK media is obsessed with "blade violence" since they outlawed/confiscated guns. Perhaps when the pols and media realize that we're dealing with people violence, they can stop the misleading rhetoric and address the real issue...which is NOT early release, reduced sentences, "life" in prison, etc. Too many bleeding hearts, socialists, corrupt politicians, stoopid people and the media hyenas who can't wait to gnaw at the bones of tragedy and misdeed.

I was not there, but I'm 99.9% certain that the firearm involved with this incident was NOT an assault rifle.

Might have been what the MSM and the anti-2A crowd like to call an "assault rifle" (what we would call a modern sporting rifle), but certainly not a true assault rifle.

As a grade school teacher and someone who has helped many people learn how to use guns safely.

A slight degree of intelligence and a small understanding of physics is all that is needed to be able to operate AR's and AK's (and any gun) Safely using them is more of a critical thought process than anything. Some people are smart enough to be experts in gun safety at 10 years old while some adults are to stupid to handle firearms. Rote memorization can be helpful for people, but understanding 'why' the rules of firearm safety are important helps instill a greater overall internalization of them.

The reason why I bring this up is because there is no difference in safely using bolt actions, pumps, semi autos, pistols, rifles or shotguns. They all can be used unsafely if the rules of firearm safety are not followed and they can all be used safely if the rules are followed. Guns however are not that overly complicated mechanisms, they should be respected for their potential destructive power, but not thought of as these things that only heavily trained people can effectively handle.
