Just wast thinking about David Crockett...and was wanting to make a new thread...
Dangerous I know , thinking that is , and new threads... :D
Seeing as how this the Black Powder Discussion lets Discuss Crockett...
Please post your thoughts and questions about this man and his life and times...
Also any memorabilia related to him...go on now , dig in that closet and find your old coonskin cap....:D

David Crockett is one of my heroes...like anyone he has or had , his good points and faults...but still , he was and is a man worthy of respect.
I have a few books which feature Crockett as a character or are about him...and a few Southern Style Longrifles that are from his era...
Some books...
Non-fiction :
A Narrative of the life of David Crockett , by himself....By David Crockett
American Legend The Real Life Advetures of David Crockett...By Buddy Levy
With Santa Anna In Texas...By Jose Enrique de la Pena
Three Roads to the Alamo. , the lives of David Crockett , James Bowie and William Barret Travis... By William C. Davis
Fiction:
The Gates of the Alamo... By Stephen Harrigan
Wave high the Banner...By Dee Brown
Nevermore...By Harold Schechter

Oh yeah and the rifles...:D

The last two rifles were flintlock at one time...but were converted to percussion during their working life.

Thanks for the reminder, Andy.
History is so deeply important for the reminder of whence we came and why we are here. With the selective and collective amnesia of today's society, it's no wonder we have devolved into a 5 minute culture and are facing down the deconstruction of American fabric in our generation.

Sgt. Alvin York was a great man indeed ...The University of Tennessee has his percussion long rifle and they were kind enough a few years ago to send me detailed pictures of it....I have plans to make a copy of his rifle.

Daniel Boone is a hero of mine as well...
Boone however was born in Pennsylvania....although he did wander and hunt in Tennessee.

Daniel Boone is part of Tennessee legend, I know he was born in Pennsylvania.

Yes indeed ....which is why I said...

.although he did wander and hunt in Tennessee.

When the word from is used in conjunction with a person's name , which is in your post , it can mean that the person was from , as in born there...

Just picky with information about Crockett ...and how it is worded...Lots of not so true "facts" about him , are out there...
Like :
His Name for starters....he , at least according to period accounts , preferred to be called David...
He really didn't like coonskin caps or when in Congress to be reminded of his poor background or rough backwoodsman image that was even then popular in the press...
Andy

Grammatically tricky, I was referring to as to where the legends came from, not the men. Boone is indeed a legend in that entire region.
Similar to how I became a legend in the California pornography industry, but was born in Arizona.:s0112:.

Thanks for this post Andy,
Led me to read his auto and it's good...

I think the most amazing thing about David was the fact he fell in ice water up to his neck, didn't die and didn't wreck his gun...
He was:
Extremely resourceful,
Physically capable,
And an intelligent problem-solver...

Then I learn that the intelligence and bravery demonstrated in his field of life he takes to the arena of politics...as one could argue that's not far off from falling in heck up to your neck...and trying to keep what's most important to you from breaking....
And in his case I learn he didn't trade his principles for power...and he didn't coddle the truth to keep others happy or himself comfortable...

In the world of politics I am impressed with:
His use of humor,
Quick wits,
Understanding of human nature,
And dislike of using others to serve purposes...

"...but thought it better to keep a good conscience with an empty purse than to get a bad opinion of myself with a full one." David Crockett

A good man to bring to our minds

Funny I thought Daniel Boone was from Kentucky? Also isn't David Crockett from Greene County Tennessee?
Daniel Boone ...Helped to "discover"* Kentucky....he even founded a town ...Boonesborough Kentucky
But he was born in Pennsylvania in 1734...
Crockett was born in 1786... in Tennessee.
Andy
* As in leading hunting parties , surveyors and later immigrants to Kentucky...James M. Bride is credited with the discovery of what would become Kentucky in 1754.
In 1754 Boone was in N. Carolina with a Militia Unit fighting in The French and Indian War.

I would also encourage those who like to view their history , to watch both movie versions of The Alamo.
Both Wanye's from 1960 and Hancock's from 2004 are very good.
Each also has their good and bad points...as for which is better...
I like the 2004 version for the more personal portrayal of the "The Big Three " at the Alamo...
But Wayne put his heart into his version and its a must see.
Don't take my word for it...treat yourself and watch 'em both.

Also these are a bit tough to find and I would love to have a copy ...but if you can find them...
Native Son Productions did a series of video documentaries , called The Hunter Heroes ...One was on Boone and Crockett , the other was on Carson and Cody.
Very well done and no real complaints from this historian....other than I ain't got a copy of them.... :D
