I'd say Savage. Nothing I've owned from Savage hasn't shot incredibly well right off the bat.

Suggestions? thoughts? Was thinking a ruger ranch or howa. cant seem to find a howa though
I would suggest savage axis II (not axis). The reason is accuracy and accutrigger. Cost is probably $350-$700 street price depending on stock u want, if u want scope included, and if u want a threaded barrel or not.

They may have tactical version that takes stanag mags too, I'm not sure. I know they have a couple different mag options for .308/6.5 CM but I haven't researched .223 options.

Savage 110 would be a little more $. As I recall they had a couple 110 tactical version with threaded barrel and takes standard magpul mags for .308/6.5CM but don't know if they have those in .223 or not.

I don't know if they are still available but the Stevens 200 ( made by Savage ) is a great gun and was/is based on the Savage 10/11 rifle. No accutrigger but easy enough to mod it down to <2lbs.

I got my savage model "II" for like $300. Heavy 20" barrel, accutrigger and a 1:9.5 twist. Makes nickel sized groups at 100 with my 62 grain AR load, so I'll give another vote for savage. They're pretty hard to beat for the money and aftermarket support is strong

Savage Axis II XP 223 Rem Bolt-Action Rifle with 4-12x40mm Scope and Heavy Barrel

$350.00

I myself would not mind having one of these at all though I might want a wood stock version or even a stainless wood stock version, those options get expensive. I would also kinda like to try building a very accurate .223 AR based rifle that could do 1/2 at 100 yards and have very good accuracy out to 200+ yds for critters.

But with the Savage Axis II XP 223, just can't beat the accuracy cost factor here. Probably cost me 3 times this cost to build the AR and get this accuracy.
