If you search online there are various vendors selling ones with boxes identical to this one, and some that say 1000 lumens. I would call Surefire to ask them.
Did your friend buy it in a LGS or online?

The 500 lumen version is "older". Surefire has had MANY iterations of this light.

Original X300 110-200 lumens (2010-2013)
X300-A (prior to 2016) 500 lumens
X300-A (forward to 08/2018) 600 lumens
X300-A/B (08/2018-present) 1000 lumens

the UPC is 084871319065 according to the box. doing a google search shows multiple listings as 500 lumens 600 lumens and 1000 lumens. i think @Kruel J is onto somethin

Yep, if this is the original packaging for this light it will be 500 lumens. The newer packages look differently and reflect the updated Lumen output.

If the serial number under the logo starts with a B, it's a 1k lumen.

Only the newest models are 1k, They are also in 500 and 600 lumen models under the same X300 ULTRA name

Additionally, the only difference between the 500 and 600 lumen models is the toggle switch ears. Longer on the 500 Lumen and stubbier on the 600 Lumen models. As mentioned in the previous post, the only difference between the 600 and 1000 Lumen models is the serial number starting with A/B respectively.
