Bevel up or bevel down

Flints.

I have one flinter (Northstar West Tradegun) that has to be shot bevel up. Bevel down won't clear the top of the steel.

With the other 4 flintlocks it's a matter of preference. Three seem to work better bevel down and one works best bevel up.

This is all with English flints.
 
I voted it depends.
Some of the flintlocks I have like up some like down ... a few don't care one way or the other.
Just what the lock likes or how the flint is formed.
