The Spitfire is a beautiful airplane with some remarkable performance. but the Battle of Britain was won mostly by the Hawker Hurricane. It accounted for roughly 55% of the Luftwaffe aircraft shot down mostly bombers. The Spitfire is credited with 42% of the German aircraft mostly fighters. Certainly the bombers were the greater threat..

Mark, what you describe is well-coordinated TEAMWORK! The Spits engaged the fighters (Bf-109's) while Hurricanes went after the bombers. The bombers were much less manueverable, and the Hurricanes had cannons, which were very effective on the bombers. :D Very well planned use of resources!

The Battle of Britain was won [and lost] due to a number of misconceptions on both sides. Basically it concerned the alleged numerical superiority/inferiority of the RAF and the Luftwaffe.

The RAF believed that the Luftwaffe squadron was identical in size to their own - 12 to 14 a/c.

The Luftwaffe believed that the RAF squadron was identical in size to their own - 9 to 10 a/c.

In the final days of the air battle, the RAF were able to loft 25% more a/c than the opposition.

Many brave young men on both sides died.

But many lived.

RAF pilots could bail out over their own country and survive to receive medical treatment, if needed, recover and fly again.

And many did.

Luftwaffe pilots bailing out either went into the Channel, or landed on British soil and were lost forever as a result.

The Kingdom would benefit if there were more men who followed the tradition of Fairbairn and Sykes.

The overarching reasons for Britain's victory in the Battle of Britain was twofold.

First, Germany attempted to conduct a strategic bombing campaign without heavy long range bombers; the Luftwaffe's medium bombers had to be stationed in France and didn't have the payload, or numbers, for delivering critical damage to any one set of targets on a sustained basis.

Second, the British had developed the first fully integrated air defense system. Radar, aircraft spotters, search lights, anti aircraft guns and fighter interceptor squadrons were all coordinated from a single command center. Essentially, the RAF and supporting services were fighting from interior lines of communication and made highly effective use of limited resources.

In the end, the Luftwaffe never fully recovered from its losses over Britain and struggled to increase effectiveness with the ever increasing demands in multiple theaters. The Battle of Britain is the point, in my view anyway, where the tide of the war actually turned.

How's that for a thread drift...
