I'll admit to having skipped most of the thread..... but I love my lab-shepherd, my pit bull, and my Lhasa ahpso. The Lhasa is the meanest of the bunch.

Well mixed breeds can be a toss up. I had a Pit-Collie mix and he had kinda conflicted behavior. He was quite aggressive and would chew your leg off. But he would go for help. My small Poodle-Pomeranian mix had the gray/white colors of an English Sheep dog. He was a great companion and was very smart. I once took him into a 7-11 and you know the yellow cone sign that said "wet floor"? Well he read it and did right there. I sure miss him and his sense of humor.;)

My lab shepherd is 3/4 lab, with 1/8 shepherd, and the last 1/8... well....
Dogue de Bordeaux (French mastiff)
Chinook
Basset Hound
Giant muenster lander
Norwich terrier
Best dog I've ever had.
My pittie and my Lhasa are pure breeds, but I love my mutt. All are rescue's, but they rock. Guardians matter.

Hey, what about a Burnese mountain dog?
That's about as close to a golden as you can get for sweet temperament
I like them but their lifespan is pretty short. About 6-8 years. They're one of the 4 breeds
of Sennenhund-type Swiss dogs. Check out the Greater Swiss Mountain dog. Their hair is
shorter but like the Bernese they have a good temperment with a better life span.
Quite a bit bigger though.

I probably will settle on another lab or lab mix. They're hard to top. I definitely will be going to a shelter.

The reason I made this thread was to see what others described a breed they've own as.
Saw a "Mastador" at the dog park today. Its a mastiff/lab apparently. Really cool looking dog!

The old saying no matter how tough you are there is always someone or something tougher. Guess the badger found out the hard way.

Well if you have only had Labs I would recommend Golden Retriever they are wonderful loyal and loving

I'm knida hung up on German Shepherds and I will tell you this German Shepherd dogs are not for everyone
I don't say that to be mean just more of a heads up ,Zero strangers will be getting into your house Unless daddy (alpha) says it's ok
they are built to protect their pack and you are pack leader alpha but not everyone wants and alpha dog .
German Shepherd Dog is the only true Dog everything else is a breed The GSD is the closest domesticated relative to the Wolf which is where dogs started from. good luck with whatever you decide on and make sure you socialize him or her when puppy they will get along better in all situations as they get older Ok I'm done blowing hard

I'll have to call BS on them being as or more closer related to the wolf than any spitz breed especially the malamute or husky
I believe the GSD was a developed breed. I have never read in any dog book that it was an acient breed.
Not that they aren't great dogs but not closest to the wolf by any means

That's about what I was thinking;)

When I was a wee little Lad in Boise we had a dog named Pat
that my Father had Smuggled home from Germany.
He was supposed to get shots but was too young so
me Pops hid him in his trench coat and
when boarding that big ship home the little guy whined,
the MP Cpl looked up in the sky wondering
'what kind of a bird was making That noise'!!!;)

Pat was a real character and looked like a 2X Fox Terrier.

So when I was abt 5 we were walking thru the neighborhood and
there was the most beautiful Snow White GSD tied up
in another ETO Vet's front yard. Also brought home from Germany.

Pat was wanting to play and when he got lose enough that
Shepherd grabbed him by the stomach and ripped him apart.

I believe that GSDs are one of the best breeds out there,
but this POS was Waffen SS and NOT trained by Otto Skorzeny.

Just sayin.

As a kid we had GSDs that were totally acclimated to having kids and strangers around.
As a result, twice we came home to strangers in the house.

Both times pops was told the dogs barked and growled, but let them in, and then wouldn't let them leave.
One was a friend of my brother's but the other one left in handcuffs with a police escort.

The dogs ate good both nights.

Well everyone, I came across a user on here whom sold me their dog due to lack of time to care for her and lack of interest from their kids.

She's great annnnddd is a 1.5 year old pure bred czech German sheperd.

I'm taking her up in the snow after work Friday. Hopefully I can get some good pictures of her trodding around in it before it gets too dark.

Thank you all for the insight from your experiences with several breeds. I will say that it's clear that German sheperds have distinctly different personalities from labs. She seems much more observant and protective of the house and her "pack". Great dog but different than my old black lab.
