Ppl are reading too much into OP. he had best interest in mind. a used glock for $350-$400 is better deal than any hipoint. they may go bang at the range- but i would not trust my life to one.

I thank the OP, with the Obama thing there are people like me who have put off buying a handgun in the past and do not know much about gun values.

I appreciate the OP stepping up and trying to clue in some of us newbies. A loot of the guns I see posted in this forum are priced good, but a good percentage is over priced (including mine).

It pays to educate ourselves and shop around.

Buying anything used is always a buyer beware thing, I will buy local and FTF, even if it cost me more, I don't want my first handgun to be on the confiscate list.

Hey how does one get some of these surplus guns? What are they surplus to? If they are so cheap and what not I'll take some tauraus' and rugers out fo the market for you guys if they're cheap enough:D

So what is wrong with the P-series?

I guess a lot has changed in the last few years.

Nothing is wrong with them, I just think a Glock or Beretta or 1911 in the same price range is a better option. My first semi-auto was a P95, and being a newb I paid close to $500 for it new at an unscrupulous shop in california (they got their FFL revoked a couple months after I got it from them).

Surplus guns are usually guns used in foreign countries militaries, most are demilled then re-assembled in the US. Century Arms imports alot of surplus guns and ammo. All mosins, CZ-52's, TT-33's, Sig P6's and many others are surplus guns. The Sig P-6's could be had last year in the $270ish range, but they have increased since then. Mosins are still cheap, although the ammo has doubled (but it is still cheap). Cheap CZ-52's and TT-33's ($150 price range) are difficult to come by, but can be had if you look hard. The greatest part about the CZ-52's and TT-33's is the ammo they shoot is $130 or so for 1200 rounds, and it's a hot round (7.62X25 tokarev). There are other surplus guns out there, but the cheap ammo has dried up for alot of them, which will happen eventually with the guns mentioned above.

No one would pay 350-400 for a hi point(new or otherwise). But for a P series ruger maybe. And I have to defend ruger here as my P-90 is a tough gun that shoots very well and is very dependable. :s0146:

...thank god some one said it.

Who ever would consider Ruger's "budget crap guns, haven't been dealing in firearms long enough.

Taurus is decent, but from Brazil, they are a very good gun.

Springfield now has the Croation HS2000>>>XD Series, prior to that there 1911 were decent at best...

Rugers are not combat Pistols,, but built within 1911 specs...(often times bulky), and the HS2000 was a duty built combat pistol.

Not the same crowd, budget, or availability.

But if you can find an XD for fewer than 400, any caliber, I will buy it right now.
Besides, I was in the military and forced to contend with a Beretta, never in my civilian life would I do such a thing.

Ruger P series is hands down the best bang for your buck, how it got looped in with Hi Point...

As far as XD series, well it is the real "1st gun of the 21st Century"...as some often quoted specialists have said.

If you prefer GLOCKS over XD's, you haven't fired an XD. But that's a tired, old horse to beat.

Thanks,:) that answers it.

I think I'm with you here if I could afford an XD I'd have gotten one too but I couldn't afford it. I just haven't met the desperate crack head yet so I'll stick with my Ruger till I can get the xd.

So I am clear, I hav eno experience with a semi-auto Taurus.

I have a few Brazilian made Taurus Revolvers that are great.

I have a P-90 and a p-85 Ruger, great guns, ...just bulky

I bought an XD9SC, best gun I ever fired. This is coming form a gentleman that never purchased a "plastic gun" prior, steel framers only , due to his ill experiences at the ranges when considering them. Then Springfield got rid of all those miss conceptions and design flaws (MY OPINION) when the imported the HS2000.

DUTY pistols and COMBAT pistols are not the same grade of quality. It is always give an take of attributes.

I have since purchased an XD40SC, and an XD45 in 5inch.

But I still own the P-85 and P-90, alhtough I believ ethey are aircraft aluminum.

Buying on gunbroker of course involves other fees, which kills it alot of times for me. Yet I have found things on there that were worth purchasing.

Bottom line, just do your research before you buy.

fromotoc has a good point. It is always a good idea to research before you buy. Cars, electronics, etc., any consumer item.

I have low-balled a couple guys here on the classifieds because after looking around they are $100 or more over market value. So in that case I will go to Gunbroker, Bud's, etc. and pay the fees.

Guys... your used guns are not worth the same as a new one. :s0114: I don't know if you have formed a personal attachment and have issues letting go, or if you are trying to sucker a newb or what, but maybe that is why your gun has not sold yet.

But if the price is close enough I will ALWAYS buy the local gun.

I have never paid more than 350 for a Ruger P series. They ussualy go for $325-375. There dependabiity is top, and most people dont know they have a very good quality control team, right here in America.

Sig's are good, but rarely priced at 450. SPecifically the P250.

Glocks are designed to suck up weapon allowances. Mostly LEO market. True Operators would never waist there money on them.

Wow, that is a bold statement. I strongly disagree.

Strong? I wouldnt say so? No offense was meant. loaded statement? maybe.

Its just the fact of my experience. When I have worked in civilian defense environments wiht LEO as team members, it is Glocks primarily, more so lately XD's.

Glock spends alot of money making sure LEO are aware of glocks. When you are in a military AO, ....you will simply not see a glock.

Kimber, Springfield and Sig are your main players. and yes, still 1911 frames, despite there short comings.

My point was not to bash on Glocks, but to stick up for Ruger, so to cut out both in one sweep.

I would take a Ruger p-90 in ot an AO before I took a Glock.

But this is just my opinion.

I ussualy dont post, but the Ruger being bunched in with Hi POint made me choke a little.

Yea, it's funny people trying to sell a 150-250 gun for 300-400.. what even funnier is people actually buy them..

I had a guy trying to sell me a really used very dirty CZ-52 for $300 Something did not look right, he dry fired it right in front of me! so I Took it down rollers looked good and but had a broken firing pin. I Told him I would give him $100 he got angry and told me to take a flying phuck said he paid $250 for it a month ago only shot it a couple times! I asked him did you have ammo in it when you were pulling the trigger? He said he never dry fires? Nothing was wrong just a bit used and firing pins don't break? I said see ya I got better things to do.

There is a sucker born every day I guess.

Info on the CZ-52 http://www.makarov.com/cz52/index.html

I've fired many handguns and for some reason Glock is still my favorite, save for a well-tuned 1911. In my opinion, Glock is the best value in the $400-$500 range. I've owned and carried my G19 for a couple years now, and looking at the thing you wouldn't be able to tell, it still looks new. I've shot at least a thousand rounds without one failure of any sort. I purchased it for $415 in like new condition with bright night sights from NW Armory.

Please don't take this as me saying XD's suck. They just don't fit my hand as well as the Glock does, but I believe they too are excellent guns.
