Deputies said the homeowner was able to calm the man enough so that they could have a conversation on the front porch while everyone else in the house hid in a back bedroom.

According to the 911 caller, the man was telling the homeowner to shoot him, and that if he did not shoot him, the man would "go after" or "hurt" the homeowner's wife, deputies said.

After several minutes of the homeowner trying to deescalate the unwanted man, the man assaulted the homeowner. That's when the homeowner shot him, deputies said.

The man died at the scene, according to the Clark County Sheriff's Office.

Unfortunately as the Texas Sgt found out, better hold on to all the courts receipts. A year later some DA looking for a promotion may come knocking.

Why the homeowner opened his front door to begin with is beyond me?
I opened my door to two off-duty out of area cops once, at 3am with my Desert Eagle in my hand--they wanted to ask about the neighbor and didn't seem to mind my gun (which I promptly tucked under my arm as soon as I realized they were cops)

I'm not sure why I bothered to open the door but I do some weird stuff sometimes when I'm not quite awake

I spent 22 years convincing my wife we don't need to lock our door out here in unincorporated Clark Co
and now this happens!! the first we've heard of such an incident out here - but it happened - I now have to carry a house key when I work out on the property
5 miles out of town, on an unlit dead end country road, behind a security gate - one would assume you and your family are safe
and a dead head deviant jumps your fence, walks up your private road, threatens your wife and attacks you at your own front door
even though it's uncontested self defense, you're goin to loose your firearm for a while
I'm not going to use my HK or Smith 686 to shoot some brain addled homeless guy at my front door and loose a $700 pistol
I pulled out my old Ruger Service 6 and loaded it with Buffalo Bore Heavy .38 +P
the cylinder lockup is a little loose after 35 years, but at 3', who cares
my wife is from Texas, from old Texas homesteader genetics, has long white hair and cusses like a Sailor
I don't know which is more frightening to an intruder, my wife in a Texas farmwife rant, or the Ruger .357

It's the stuff that you do when you're awake that keeps us worried!

because you can't shoot through the door here in Washington
this homeowner lives on acreage with out buildings with lots of tools that can be turned into weapons
he had a John Deer with front loader sitting outside for god sake, if the nut job got the tractor started, he could take out the house
you can't wait for an intruder to find a Maddox or chainsaw out in your toolshed when you live on working property

this is a common gardening Maddox, I used to keep it outside on the porch
after this incident, my wife makes me keep it in the front room
many a Viking raider were killed by Saxon farmers with such a tool
when you live out on remote property, any garden tool can be turned into a deadly weapon
you don't have to have a firearm to have a deadly weapon
and one can't lock yourself in your home and wait for the Sheriff to show up, they're 15 min out

I noted this actually made Fox News

but even they are not mentioning this "homeowner" lived on remote property in an unincorporated area of Clark Co.

commenters asked why he opened his door, instead of just hiding behind locked doors and calling police

as a property owner in unincorporated Clark Co, we can't lock ourselves in the house and just call 911, as many suggest

by the time the Sheriff gets there, the intruder can get a double blades ax, Maddox or chainsaw out of your garden shed and cut your front door down

And German parachutists when they landed on Crete. My late Uncle Micky was a Wehrmacht comms specialist on loan to the Luftwaffe for that particular escapade. He and eleven others jumped - him for the very first time ever - one got crocked up on landing, and by nightfall five more had been killed by understandably annoyed locals using farm implements. The invaders had somehow imaged that they'd be welcomed.......just hoe wrong could they be? [did you see what I did there? ;)]

Casualties were so high that H*t*l*r only used these guys as ground-pounders from then on - they put up an incredible defensive line in Iddly. Remember Monte Cassino, anybody?

Where we live we have much the same problem - calling out the police involves them driving all the way around a mile and a half one way traffic town circle, with ELEVEN sets of lights that can hold up EVERYBODY, even those trying to get out of the way of the police car - or fire truck...

The town planners hereabouts had no grasp of their job - mind you, the town 'plan' was laid out around 1000AD...

Mattock but I expect that a mad ox would be effective too.

Solder = sodder, mattock = maddox.....tomaHto = tomaYto etc.

You say LEEzure and I say LEZHURE.

You say ROWT and I say ROOT.

You say fradgle and I say frag-EYE-l. Same with missel and missEYEle.

EYE-raq and EYE-ran/ How did THAT happen? So why don't you say EYE-taly?

if you ever tried to clear old blackberry roots out of a field, you would know exactly what a mattock is for
even if you spray the plant, you have this big gnarly root you have to get out before cultivating
this was a 20 year plus blackberry root I had to dig our of my old garden plot
we grow them big in the NW
although a mad ox would probably worked to pull it out also
