When I was a child in public school we actually learned how to make soap from fat and lye, we even had an Ash Washer to leach the lye from wood ashes

The first Foxfire book had soap making along with lots of other instruction in it.

A series of books that are good to have. Somehow i think paper and ink will last or at least be accessible in a SHTF situation.

I don't know if the lye was a cleanser or a preservative, or if the lye/fatcombo was special some how

Lowes sells a 100% lye product called Roebic Crystal Drain Opener. I've used it to make soap before and it worked out well.
