Are these difficult to complete? Any welding? I've got zero knowledge of them.
If you have the tools no. Barrel, trunion, gas block and front sight are all press fit and pinned to each other. Many guys dont have a press or dont want to deal with the hassle. Once the barrel assembly is pressed the rest is riveted in place on the receiver.
 
Very easy to do with screws. I have build 2 aks using machine screws instead of rivets and they are still fine after thousands of rounds. I gently coat the trunnion areas with...JB weld and then screw it together with rrd loctite on the screws... no problem at all.
